Abstract

In the period from January 2015 to November 2015 one hundred and two patients underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy were randomly allocated to one of three groups and comparative study was done. Fifteen minutes before the end of the surgery the patients received intraperitoneal 50ml normal saline (group N), intraperitoneal 100 mg bupivacaine diluted in 50 ml saline (group B) or intraperitoneal 100 mg hydrocortisone diluted in 50 ml saline (group H), into the hepato-diaphragmatic space, near and above the hepato-duodenal ligament and above the gall bladder bed under direct vision.
Postoperatively, pain score using Numeric Rating Scale, time of Rescue analgesic and Post-operative nausea and vomiting were recorded
The results showed that there was decrease in pain intensity in groups B and group H compared to group N with statistically significant difference, andthere was delay in the time of rescue analgesia in group B and group H compared to group N with a statistically significant difference but there was no statistically significant difference between the groups regarding post operative nausea and vomiting
We concluded that intra peritoneal instillation of bupivacaine or hydrocortisone after laparoscopic cholecystectomy successfully decrease post operative pain during first 24 hour and delay the time of rescue analgesia with no effect on post operative nausea and vomiting.
