Abstract

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection continues to be an important global health problem and is one of the main causes of chronic liver disease worldwide .It is a hepatotropic viral infection caused by hepatitis C virus (HCV), which is a major causes of cirrhosis. iver Cirrhosis is considered as one of the major health issues as it is one of the most important causes of death in the world , thus it needs a nursing intervention to improve the patient’s management from the diagnosis to end of the course of antiviral therapy and during follow up. Medical treatments that may halt the progression of compensated cirrhosis to decompensated cirrhosis are currently being developed (Goldberg E and Chopra S. 2014). Aim of the study This study aims to evaluate the impact of nursing intervention on outcomes for patients receiving direct acting antiviral drugs for treatment of chronic hepatitis C. Patients and methods Research design: Quasi –experimental research design was used in this study. Setting: The study was carried out at the Unit of Treatment of Viral Hepatitis at Assuit Health Directorate. Sample: A convenient sample of 60 patients with diagnostic liver cirrhosis (HCV) who were received treatment with DAADs based regimen Summary 108 included in this study. They divided randomly into 2 groups; study group (30patients) who were receiving nursing intervention and control groups (30 patients) who were exposed to the routine care in the unit. Tools: The following three tools were utilized to collect data in this study. Tool (1) liver assessment sheet: to assess patient’s medical and laboratory data and consists of four parts: Part (1): Socio-demographic and medical data. Part (2): Laboratory and imaging assessment sheet. Part (3): Child-Turcotte-Pugh - score. Part (4): Physical examination assessment sheet Tool (II): Nursing intervention about disease and drugs: It is includes two parts: Part (1) Nursing intervention which includes instructions related to liver cirrhosis and its complications. Part (2) Nursing intervention which includes instructions related to direct acting antiviral drugs for treatment of chronic hepatitis C. Main results of this study revealed that: Based on the results of the present study; it was being conclude that: The nursing intervention had beneficial effects on improving patients knowledge about chronic hepatitis C, its treatment and management of DAADs regimen side effects, that reflected by improvement in laboratory findings, patients complains, information about chronic hepatitis C, sustained virological response to treatment ,information about good nutrition for patient with diagnostic liver cirrhosis and ascites. There were highly statistically significant differences (P= 0.000) after nursing intervention were higher than before implementation of the nursing intervention for study group, versus there wasn’t statistically significant difference of control group.
