Abstract Summary Chronic liver disease (CLD) is known to cause significant morbidity and mortality, typically due to a number of complications that include ascites, hepatic encephalopathy, variceal hemorrhage and hepatorenal syndrome. CLD negatively impacts health-related quality of life (HRQL) with patients suffering from fatigue, loss of self-esteem, an inability to function at work, anxiety, depression and other emotional problems that profoundly decrease their quality of life and well-being. QOL is a very broad term and complex concept is new, but its content is not new; the good life has been the aim of human beings. QOL questions regarding the essential quality the good life have occupied the minds of the greatest thinkers across time and cultures. Aim of the study: The aim of the study is to assess the quality of life among elderly patients with chronic hepatitis at Assiut city. Subjects and methods Research design: A descriptive research design was used in this study. Setting of the study: This study was conducted in two geriatric homes, two geriatric social clubs and unit of treatment for viral hepatitis in Assuit City. Sampling: A convenient sample was used to include all geriatric people at two geriatric homes, two geriatric social and unit of treatment for viral hepatitis in Assuit City. Tools of data collection: The following tools were utilized by the invastigator, tested and piloted to collect data pertinent to the study:- Tool (I): administered Interview Questionnaire Sheet: Structured questionnaire sheet was developed by invastigator to collect information from the participants was included three parts:- Summary - 88 - Part 1: Socio-demographics characteristics: this include: - Name, age, sex, marital status, residence. Part 2: knowledge of studied subject about Nutrition and food habits It included the following questions: (Feeding system may change with age, Do you eat any food or Kulaitha been Thermal in oil ….. etc). Part 3: assessment knowledge of studied subject about chronic hepatitis: It included the following questions: (information about chronic hepatitis, source of this information, mode of transmission ….etc). Second tools: Questionnaire to Measure the Quality of Life. Methods: An official approval letter was obtained from Dean of Faculty Nursing, Assiut University to head of Unit Viral Hepatitis Treatment Directorate of Health Affairs and Geriatric Homes and Geriatric Clubs at Assiut City. To obtain the necessary approval for conduct the research. This letter included a permission to collect the necessary data and explain the purpose and nature of the study. The main results of the present study were: 1. That statistical significant difference between level of knowledge of studied subject about chronic hepatitis and their educational level p-value=0.000, while no statistical significant differences in group 2. 2. The correlation between score of knowledge and quality of life domains that there were significant negative correlations between score of knowledge with “Emotional Function” and “Worry” (r= -0.192; p=0.019 and r= -0.189; p=0.021 respectively). |
