Abstract

The implantable prosthesis is still a developing technology planned to be improve vision in eyes affected by advanced RDD, such as RP and AMD.
Anterior segment implants can magnify images falling on the retina to increase visual acuity in cases of AMD, and can improve dependence.
Retinal implants are the most studied neural implants. They can be subretinal (implanted between the sensory retina and the RPE), or epiretinal (placed on the retinal surface) or suprachoroidal. It has not yet been concluded which type of implant is superior over the other types, as they all have their advantages and disadvantages. Some types, like the Argus II and the Alpha IMS are commercially available. But, they could only improve VA to very low vision, with many problems that still need to be overcome, but is very promising in the future.
Other neural prosthesis, like optic nerve, LGN and cortical implants are not still advanced enough to be commercially used.
