Abstract

Nowadays laparoscopic cholecystectomy is considered the golden treatment for patients with chronic calcular cholecystitis.
This study was carried out on eighty patients presented with symptoms of chronic calcular cholecystitis. The aim of this study was to compare operative time, intra operative bleeding, post operative complications (bleeding, biliary leakage, port site infection and mild respiratory tract infection) between both obese and non obese patients.
Patients were divided into two groups, the first one (group A) was for non obese patients with BMI > 30 kg/m2 in which females were 18 patients (45%) and males were 22 patients (55%) with age ranging from 25 years to 45 years with mean age of 33.32±6.3 years. The second group (group B) was for obese patients with BMI in between 35 kg/m2 and 50 kg/m2 in which females were 27 patients (67.5%) and males were 13 patients (32.5%) with age ranging from 26 years to 48 years with mean age of 35.4±6.75 years.
All patients were subjected to through history taking, physical examination, laboratory investigations (complete blood picture, blood glucose level, prothrombin activity, aspartate transaminase, alanine transaminase, serum bilirubin level, alkaline phosphatase, viral hepatitis B&C, serum amylase and lipase), plain X-Ray chest and abdomen ultrasonography.
Mean operative time in group A was 52.98±4.469 minutes ranging from 45 to 60 minutes while, in group B it was 71.25±11.524 minutes ranging from 50 to 90 minutes.
Mean number of gauze pieces used intra operatively to asses intra operative bleeding was 2.07±0.829 in group A and 2.07±0.797 ranging from 1 to 3 pieces for both groups.
Mean amount of postoperative bleeding noted in drains was in group A 56.1±25.9 ml ranging from 20 to 100 ml while, in gro
