Abstract

Bad sleep quality is a frequent symptom described in
psychiatric patients with schizophrenia. The aim of this study
was to evaluate the effect of intervention program for improving
sleep quality among patients with schizophrenia. The study was
carried out at the inpatient department of El-Abassia
Governmental Hospital for Psychiatric Mental Health in Cairo
affiliated to Ministry of Health. It was conducted on 40 patients
with schizophrenia. Data were collected using: A) interviewing
questionnaire containing two parts I) Socio demographic
characteristics to assess (age, sex, marital status, address,
educational level, occupational position, and monthly income
II)Medical history to assess (physical illness, duration of
psychiatric illness, number of hospital admissions, beginning of
the disease and type of treatment. B) Pittsburgh Sleep Quality
Index to assess sleep quality. C) Sleep Hygiene Practices Scale to
assess sleep hygiene. D) Insomnia Severity Scale to assess
insomnia degrees. The result of this study showed that, there is
a highly statistically significant improvement at levels of
dimensions reflecting PSQI in the post intervention. In addition,
there is a highly statistically significant improvement at levels of
SHPS in the post intervention. As well as, there is a highly
statistically significant improvement in items reflecting ISS.
Finally study revealed that, there is a highly statistically
significant positive correlation between Global PSQI Percent
Score, SHPS and ISS Percent Score. Results concluded that the
implementation of the intervention program had a positive effect
on sleep quality among patients with schizophrenia. Based on
the results, it is recommended that the study highlighted to
incorporate the concepts of sleep quality into the nursing
curricula at all levels of nursing education with, emphasis on
practice of sleep hygiene. Further studies are proposed to assess
the long term effects of the present study program and similar
ones.
