Abstract

In the present study, the microsurgical removal of colloid cysts appears to result in a significantly higher rate of complete radical resection, decreased rate of recurrence, and fewer reoperations than with endoscopic removal. This may be related to the advantage of performing 2-handed micro-dissection of the cyst wall from critical adherent structures to achieve true GTR. The rate of mortality and shunt dependency is similar between both groups. The overall morbidity rate is lower in the endoscopic group.
The quality of available data in the literature is the primary limitation to any analysis of pooled data. The inclusion of smaller case series reduced the quality of the data when compared with randomized controlled analysis. These heterogeneous sources of data introduces institutional, geographic, and selection biases. One major limitation is the inconsistency in results reporting between each article. In addition, the endoscopic group had a shorter mean follow-up time in comparison with the microsurgery group.
