Abstract

Among the cardinal signs of early pregnancy are nausea and vomiting (NVP), which affect up to 90% of pregnant women. In the absence of vomiting, nausea can still have a detrimental effect on women`s physical and mental well being.
Many women use non-pharmacologic therapies for NVP because of their concerns about adverse effects of drugs during embryonic and early fetal development. Remedies used for nausea and vomiting in early pregnancy must be safe in that they do not increase the risk of spontaneous abortion, birth defects and other adverse events of pregnancy. Conservative treatment involves dietary changes, emotional support and alternative therapy such as ginger or acupressure. However, women with more complicated nausea and vomiting of pregnancy may need pharmacologic therapy.
Acupressure can be applied manually or with wrist bands correctly by providing pressure on the p6 acupoint, which is located three finger breadths proximal to distal wrist crease, as well as 1 cm deep between the tendons of the flexor Carpi radialis and the Palmaris long us muscles. The procedure is non- invasive, safe, cost-effective & doesn`t need special equipment. It only needs fingers; provided that it can be performed anywhere & at any time.
The aim of this study was to determine the effect of acupressure (P6) on symptoms of morning sickness in early pregnancy.
