Abstract

Aluminum-base surface composites reinforced with graphite particles had been successfully fabricated on an AA 6061 by friction stir processing (FSP). The effects of tool rotational speed, tool translation speed and number of FSP passes on distribution of graphite particles in metal matrix, microstructure, microhardness, wear properties, natural frequency and damping factor of composites were investigated and the following conclusions can be drawn;
 The microstructure of the FSPed composites, which reinforced with graphite powders exhibits fine grain size.
 Increasing the tool rotational speed, decreasing the tool translation speed and two passes FSP lead to uniform distribution of graphite powders.
 Microhardness of the FSPed composites was relatively increased by amount of 13.77 % compared with that of the base material.
 The wear properties of the AA 6061 alloy were enhanced by addition of graphite particles compared with that of the base metal. In addition, the wear rate was improved by amount of 42 %.
 Resonant frequency and damping factor of FSPed composites were increased compared with those of the base metal.
FUTURE WORK
 Design new experiment to investigate the potential of FSP as crack repairing technique.
 Investigate the effect of cooling rate on the process as well as on the resulting microstructure.
