Abstract

AF is the commonest cardiac arrhythmia in the general population, and it is more common in elderly patients.
Risk factors for AF include age, ISHD, PE, HTN, DM, liver disease, CKD, thyrotoxicosis, cardiomyopathy, anemia, infection and electrolyte disturbance.
TE has an important role in antioxidant and immune defenses, so electrolyte imbalance such as K, Na, Ca and Mg causes arrhythmias.
The aim of the study is to measure the incidence rate of AF in elderly patients admitted to ICU and its possible risk factors, and it was recruited to all elderly patients admitted to the Geriatrics ICU in a period of 6 months from May to October 2016.
Our study showed that the incidence rate of AF was 12.6%. Pneumonia, Zn and Cu deficiency was statistically significant risk factors for AF in a univariate and multivariate analysis. So, further interventional studies are needed to explore if correcting trace elements deficits will lead to decrease AF incidence.
Other factors were not statistically significant like shock, sepsis, heart diseases and medications like BBs, CCBs and inotropic drugs.
