Abstract

Marriage is not merely a private institution; the wellbeing of the family and its place in the society is not simply a matter for the husband and wife, but for the society as a whole. It is given a special recognition by society because it is the place where children learn what it means to be members of their family and society. Therefore, premarital care (PMC) is eagerly needed to improve the wellbeing of the family and the society as a whole.
Premarital care (including counseling and screening) is a worldwide activity aiming to diagnose, treat unrecognized disorders and reduce transmission of diseases to couples and their offspring. It is the promotion of the health and wellbeing of a woman and her husband before pregnancy because it is considered as the primary preventive approach of couples planning for conception. Premarital care can also identify and modify behavioral, medical and other health risk factors known to impact pregnancy outcomes, through prevention and management. Therefore, it is considered as a step towards saving the society and allowing people to enjoy life.
Many young women and men enter into marriage with insufficient information on sexuality, reproduction, genetic and family planning. In Yemen, consanguineous marriage is reported to be traditional and higher. Therefore, it is essential to apply premarital counseling and screening services in Yemen to reduce the number of affected births as well as their social, emotional, economical burdens on the family and health system.
The aim of this study was to assess knowledge and attitude of Yemeni secondary school`s students towards premarital screening and counseling.
