Abstract Background: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a worldwide public health problem with rising prevalence. DM is a disease affects many systems, tissues and leads to many complications. Diabetic foot is one of the most common complications of diabetes mellitus which results in foot ulcers and lower limb amputations that are considered major causes of morbidity, disability and mortality among patients with diabetic as well as emotional and physical costs. Aim of the study: Assess factors affecting development of diabetic foot among diabetic patients at Specialized Medical Hospital. Design: The study design was a descriptive correlation design. Setting: This study was conducted at the diabetic foot outpatient clinic in specialized medical hospital at Mansura University. The study sample: A convenient sample of 196 adults diabetic patients with diabetic foot from both sex, age ranged from 20 to 60 years old. Tools: Questionnaire interview sheet: Consist of four parts 1) Socio demographic characteristic and patient’s medical data sheet, 2- Diabetic and diabetic foot knowledge questionnaire, 3- Diabetic and diabetic foot self reported practice questionnaire, 4-Compliance & Barriers of compliance questionnaire. Results: Results of this study showed that there are many factors affecting development of diabetic foot among diabetic patients such as age, sex, long duration of diabetes, poor knowledge to diabetes and diabetic foot, poor compliance with diabetic diet, lack of practicing exercise, lack of diabetic foot care. Conclusion: This study concluded that poor knowledge, poor practice and chronicity of the disease was the main factors affecting development of diabetic foot among diabetic patients. Recommendations: This study recommended the development of an educational program for patients with diabetes mellitus to improve patients’ knowledge and their practices regarding treatment regimen of diabetes to prevent diabetic complications especially diabetic foot. |
