Abstract

Exclusive breastfeeding means that infant receives only breast milk and no other solids or liquids, including water, with the exception of DROP or syrups consisting of vitamin or mineral supplements or medicines. In addition, the baby is fed on demand, day and night with no restriction on the length or frequency of breastfeed.
Breastfeeding is the simplest, healthiest, and least expensive way of feeding an infant, providing nourishment for a child at a small cost to the mother. Breast milk is a complete food for full term infants, adequately supplying all nutritional needs for at least the first six months of life. However, a nursing infant`s nutrition depends on both the quality and quantity and quantity of the mother`s milk. Extensive research, especially in recent years, documents diverse and compelling advantages to infants, mothers, families, and society from breastfeeding and use of human milk for infant feeding. These include health, nutritional, immunologic, developmental, psychological, social, economic, and environmental benefits.
