Abstract

Everyday thousands of nurses are rendering bedside nursing care in health care settings as a result they are exposed to blood, body fluids and sharp objects that are contaminated with Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C and HIV. Therefore they are at risk of getting infected due to the nature of their occupations.
Standard precautions were implemented by the Centre of Disease Control to reduce the risk of transmission of micro-organisms from any source of infection in the hospital. Standard Precautions include: hand hygiene, personal protective equipment (gloves, gown, gaggle, facemasks, head protection, foot protection and wearing face shields) and prevention of sharp injuries.
Compliance of standard precaution can be influenced by many factors such as: lack of knowledge lack of equipment, individual, environmental, social factors and others. The biggest problem is not the lack of effective precautions and evidence- based guidelines, but the fact that healthcare workers apply these measures insufficiently. Improving this negligent behavior of healthcare workers is a main aspect of infection control in healthcare.
A number of conceptual models or theories have been developed to improving behavior. One of the most commonly used models is the health belief model (HBM).
Therefore the aim of this study was to assess factors influencing nurses’ compliance with infection control standards using health belief model.
A descriptive exploratory research design was used to carry out this study.
Setting:
The study was conducted at six hospitals affiliated to the Ministry of Health in Alexandria namely: Rass el tin hospital, Al- Amria hospital, Al Gomhoria hospital, Abo kier hospital, Al -Agami hospital, Borg al Arab. Data will be collected from six units namely: general medical and surgical unit, operating theatre, intensive care unit, pediatric intensive care unit, hemodialysis unit, Emergency unit at previously mentioned hospitals.
Subjects:
The subjects were selected by using systematic random sampling from the above mentioned settings.
- The sample size was estimated using Epi_Info_7statistical program which resulted in minimum sample size of (288).
The total sample size was distributed on the previously selected hospitals (48 nurses from each of the six hospitals, eight nurses from each pre-mentioned units)
Criteria of selection were:
Nurses, who provide direct patient care in the previously mentioned hospitals units, have diploma degree or Bachelor’s degree and at least one year of working experience.
