Abstract

Surgeries of the lower limb such as total hip arthroplasty, total knee arthroplasty, and anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction are associated with moderate to severe postoperative pain which can contribute to immobility related complications, delay in hospital discharge, and interfere with functional outcome Recently, among the regional anesthesia techniques on the lower limb, peripheral nerve blocks are gaining popularity because they reduce the possibility of complications and side effects associated with the central blocks. Peripheral nerve blockade provides effective analgesia and anesthesia with potentially fewer complications and side effects than central blocks. The three main nerves of the lumbar plexus contribute to the
innervation of the lower limb. Blockade of these nerves, combined with the sciatic blockade, can produce complete blockade of the lower limb. Epidural analgesia has been popular over recent decades as there is evidence for reduced blood loss and fewer thromboembolic complications using neuraxial techniques in orthopedic surgery however, Patients who received epidurals had more frequent hypotension, urinary retention, and pruritis.
