Abstract The thesis studies the disintegration of the ecosystem in two novels, Strong Motion (1992) and Freedom (2010), by the American novelist Jonathan Franzen. The ecocritical theory is employed to analyze the relationship between human beings and nature. This study explains the ability or inability of human beings to survive in an increasingly poisoned environment. Both novels, Strong Motion and Freedom, are representation of the relationship between capitalist powers and the major paradigm shift in the American life. They reflect Franzen’s interest in portraying the cruel deeds of capitalism in addition to his anxiety about the dysfunction of the American society. Nature represents the features of the physical and spiritual world. The physical world refers to the natural and precious resources like air, water, and soil which have been polluted intensively with disastrous consequences. Nature is a mirror of human actions. Human disorder is reflected in his misuse of nature. So, to benefit from nature with disastrous exploitation, human being should understand nature in order to rationalize the use of natural resources and to be in harmony with it. |
