Abstract There have been concerns in the past about uterine hyperstimulation with oral misoprostol. In studies where most women were given 20 mcg two-hourly, the hyperstimulation rates were the same as for vaginal dinoprostone. Our results suggested that titrated oral misoprostol is as effective in promoting cervical ripening and inducing labor as intravaginal dinoprostone, Misoprostol has a similar maternal and perinatal safety profile to dinoprostone. The cost benefit of misoprostol is apparent. This new approach to oral misoprostol administration was successful in minimizing the risk of uterine hyper-stimulation, which has been a feature of misoprostol use for induction of labor, at the expense of a somewhat slower response. Misoprostol has a similar maternal and perinatal safety profile compared to dinoprostone. Its cost benefit is apparent. It requires no refrigeration and has a long shelf life. |
