Abstract

Stress cannot be eliminated from our daily life no matter when and where we are in, but we can manage and control how it affects us. Every nursing student has to know that she plays an important role in health care service, she has to learn to manage her own stress through stress management training, and that she would not be able to take care of the clients, if she cannot take care of herself throughout her nursing career. Therefore, the aim of this study was:
1. Identifying sources of stress among nursing students in different schools.
2. Determining coping strategies used by nursing students in different schools.
The study was conducted at 7 secondary nursing schools of at Sohag Governorate. The actual study sample was 673 nursing students. The data were collected by using two tools:

Part 1: Socio demographic data of the study subjects as: age, gender, grade, residence and causes for joining nursing school.
Part 2: Stress in Nursing Students (SINS) scale which included 43 items under following dimensions: educational, clinical, confidence, financial, and miscellaneous stressors.
2. Adolescent Coping Orientation for Problem Experiences (ACOPE) which included 53 items under following dimensions: ventilating of felling, seeking diversion, using relaxation, developing self-reliance, developing social support, solving family problems, avoiding problems, seeking spiritual support, investing in close friends, seeking professional support, engaging in demanding activities, and being humorous.

• The five most frequently used strategies are, going along with parent’s requests and rules, praying, making one’s own decisions, apologizing, and helping other people to solve problems.
• There was a statistically significant relation between all dimensions of stressors and the scholar year. The study showed that Students in Year 2 were more likely to report higher overall stress than students in first and third year.
• A statistically significant relationship were detected between total coping strategies of nursing students and their sex, residence, and causes for joining of nursing school.
• There was no relation between stress dimensions and total coping strategies.
 Based on the study findings of the present study, the following recommendations were deduced:
• Conduct workshops about stressors and different coping strategies especially the constructive coping strategies.
• Regular meetings should be held between administration and students’ parents and between the nurse teachers and students to discuss the possible stressful situations that might happen to students.
• Assertiveness training should be offered to nursing students to improve their self-esteem and self-worth.
• Providing the school activities to help students in improving their self-image and self-worth.
• The presence of a counseling team among the schools of nursing is necessary to support nursing students.
• The educational subjects should include effective ways or strategies to manage stress as part of their curriculum.
