Abstract

Melasma is a common and well-described dermatological condition that primarily affects female patients. It involves hyperpigmentation that is chronic, relapsing, and characterized by symmetric, brownish-grey macules and patches on the face and sometimes on the neck, chest, and forearm. Inspite of being asymptomatic; melasma lesions cause aesthetic impairment, psychosocial and emotional distress and significantly affect the quality of life. Traditional treatment approaches with topical medications and chemical peels are commonly used. No single treatment has been proven to be the most effective; combinations of modalities can be used to optimize management in difficult cases. Due to the refractory and recurrent nature of melasma, patients often seek alternative treatment strategies such as laser and light therapy. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of pulsed dye laser versus intense pulsed light in the treatment of melasma. This study included 14 Egyptian female patients with different clinical varieties of melasma in a split face study. The patients were divided into two groups: group A; included all patients, they were treated with pulsed dye laser on melasma lesions on the right hemiface. group B; included all patients, they were treated with intense pulsed light on melasma lesions on the left hemiface. All the patients were subjected to: 1- Complete history taking. 2- Thorough general and dermatological examination.
