Abstract

Trauma is the forgotten epidemic and the neglected disease of modern society. The management of poly-trauma patients is a complex process requires broad knowledge, sound judgment and leader capabilities.
Chest trauma is catastrophic event that leads to morbidity and mortality among all age groups.
The aim of this study was to prove the success of selective conservative management of small pneumothorax following penetrating stab injuries
The present study was a prospective one performed on patients admitted to the Emergency Department of the Alexandria Main University Hospital for a period of one year from september2015 to September 2016 suffered from stab chest and had pneumothorax.
In this study 30 patients suffered from stab chest followed by small traumatic pneumothorax.
In the present study it was observed that the majority of penetrating thoracic injured victims were in the age group of 18-30years.
Regarding gender distribution there were 27 males (90%) and 3 females (10%) where males outnumbered females in a ratio of 9:1.
Intial X ray assessment was very helpful in detecting pneumothorax in twenty five patients. Only five patients needed CT imaging for further assessment of their lesions (occult pneumothorax) accounting (16.7%).
Follow up chest X ray was done every 6 hours for the next 24 hour. Then the patients advised to come after one week for further follow up and to exclude complications.
As regard the different types of management in this study; (86.7%) of patients were treated conservatively, 4 patients needed intervention in the form of intercostal tube drainage.
