Abstract
Introduction:
Cognitive disorders are more prevalent in the elderly causing a major burden for health care and social systems. Cognitive assessment tools are applied by healthcare professionals for early detection of cognitive impairment and for assessment of the response to treatment and follow up those patients.
Methods:
The study included 180 elderly patients aging 60 years or more males and females illiterate. They were recruited from inpatient ward and outpatient clinics in Ain Shams University hospital (June 2016 to February 2017). They were assessed with a comprehensive Geriatric assessment including Comprehensive geraitric assesment including: Complete personal and medical history, Physical examination, Mini mental status examination (MMSE), Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th Edition, Text Revision (DSM-IV-TR criteria) and the newly developed Egyptian mental state test (EMST).
Results:
The cut off value for dementia patients is 30 while the cut off value for control is 35, so that the MCI cut off value ranges from 30 to 35 with sensitivity 97.8% and specificity 93.3%.
Conclusion:
Egyptian mental state test (EMST) is a valid newly developed cognitive assessment tool.
