Abstract

Background: Bronchiectasis and COPD share many characteristics, from both the physio-pathologic and clinical-functional viewpoints. Reviewing the literature showed existence of a linear relationship between the appearance of bronchiectasis and the severity of COPD, and a higher prevalence of bronchiectasis above that of the general population.
Patients and Methods: The study included 60 smoker males ranging in age from 47 – 80 years old with mean age 59.37 ± 7.87 who were diagnosed with COPD according to the national standard. They were classified according to severity of airway obstruction using spirometric measurements and underwent high-resolution tomographic scan and sputum samples were collected for bacterial culture.
Results: A total of 60 cases were included in the present study, all patients were smoker males. Among the studied population, bronchiectasis was found in 56.7 % more in severe cases.
Conclusion: There was a higher prevalence of bronchiectasis in patients with moderate to severe COPD. Also this was associated with isolation of pathogenic micro-organisms from sputum samples.
