Abstract
Conventional ultrasound is not only a complementary tool for mammography to investigate suspicious findings, but recently used in screening of dense breast and young women with high sensitivity. However it tends to result in more biopsies because of its relatively low specificity and also significant malignancy rate. Elastography was introduced in last few decades, as a complementary tool which can be integrated with the B-mode ultrasound to improve its diagnostic performance in breast cancer detection. In this study we included 195 females with 215 breast lesions. All of them underwent conventional ultrasound examination (B-mode, CD and THI) and were assessed according to the BIRADS categories, only 175 women had mammography. Real time free hand ultrasound elastography was performed in the same session and obtained by performing slight manual axial rhythmic compression with the probe; elastogram was displayed automatically on the screen. The images were evaluated using both the 5-point color elasticity (Tsukuba) score and the strain ratio methods. All results were compared to Final histo-pathology. Currently, the color coding method is the most applicable method as the color range from red for the softest tissue to blue for the hardest components with normal breast tissue displayed in the green range. The images are then interpreted ; the most well-known and applied score is the Tsukuba scoring system established by Itoh et al in 2006.
