Abstract

The study ”Artifacts in Middle Egypt Churches” shows that the churches and monasteries of region of Middle Egypt possess great number of artifacts which have historical, artistic, and religious importance. Artifacts in some churches are neglected and no longer in use today. The researcher adopted the descriptive and analytical method, aiming to describe the artifacts and analyze their artistic features, archaeological importance, and their religious role in the christian rites.
The researcher chose and selected the best examples of artifacts that had ahistorical and artistic importance. He divided them according to their place inside the building of the church. The first chapter includes collection of icons arranged according to the subject of icon, followed by collection of iconostases where the icons are hung.
The second chapter includes artifacts which are located inside the sanctuary like the Eucharistic vessels and researcher selected chalice, the paten, the dome, the spoon, incense box, altar board, the ark throne, and bridal crowns to be studied. Also, some artifacts are followed by incense burners, candlesticks, and collection of crosses because of their usage inside the sanctuary. The chapter is continued with the study of some artifacts outside the sanctuary as lanterns, Bishop’s throne, Ambons or pulpits, and lecterns.
The third chapter explores the analytical study of the studied artifacts, including the Artistic features of icons, geometrical decorations, floral decorations, and epigraphic decoration.
Generally the study comes up with following results;
• The eighteenth and nineteenth centuries are considered the golden centuries of artifacts in the churches and monasteries of Middle Egypt.
• These artifacts are made out of different materials, but the most used materials are wood then metal as silver and copper. These churches are poor of wealth materials as glass and gold. Some of artifacts are in well state of preservation while, others are neglected and destroyed.
• Artifacts and objects of same date in the churches and monasteries of Middle Egypt are often having the same technique of manufacture and same decoration.
• Most artifacts of Middle Egypt churches are made of similar materials as wood and silver are most used. Wood is mainly used in manufacture of icons, iconostases, ark thrones, Ambons, and lecterns. Metal as material especially silver are mainly used in manufacture of Eucharistic vessels, crosses, lanterns, and incense burners.
