Abstract

The present work was performed to study the hypoglycemic action of fenugreek seeds extract (FSE), olive leaves extract (OLE) on STZ-induced diabetic rats in comparison with a standard oral hypoglycemic synthetic drug as glibenclamide (GL) for 4 weeks by assessment of erythrogram, leukogram, diabetic markers, lipid profile, liver function and kidney function.
One hundred adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided randomly into five equal groups, each containing 20 rats; group (I): in which rats were kept on distilled water without medication as negative control. group (II): rats injected IP with a single dose of freshly prepared solution of STZ (200 mg/kg B.W.). group (III): rats injected IP with a single dose of STZ as group II and left for 72 h then orally given FSE (50 mg/kg B.W.) daily for 4 weeks. group (IV): rats IP injected with a single dose of STZ and left for 72 h then orally administered OLE (0.5 g/kg B.W.) daily for 4 weeks. group (V): rats IP injected with a single dose of STZ and left for 72 h then orally received GL (0.6 mg /kg B.W.) daily for 4 weeks. Blood and tissue samples were collected after the 1st, 2nd, and 4th week post-treatment with hypoglycemic agent for hematological, clinico-biochemical, and histopathological examinations.
