Abstract

FGIDs are common diseases among the children. The study was conducted on 755 Egyptian children in two age group, one in children 4-10 years old and other group10-18 years old. They were selected among primary, preparatory and secondary schools in Tanta and El-santa centers, El-Gharbyia governorate.
The prevalence of functional gastrointestinal disorders among Egyptian children in El-Gharbyia governorate was found 25.7%; Irritable bowel syndrome was the most prevalent FGIDs, followed by aerophagia, functional constipation, functional dyspepsia then functional abdominal pain
In this study, 14.4% of the screened children had IBS; 8.5% of them had the mixed type and 6.0% had the lower one, 7.3% had aerophagia, 5.7% had functional constipation, 5.0% had functional dyspepsia, 2.0% had functional abdominal pain; 0.7% of them had the mixed type and 1.3% had the lower one, 0.7% had abdominal migraine, 0.7% had cyclic vomiting syndrome, 0.3% had adolescent rumination syndrome and 0.0% had non-retentive fecal incontinence.
In this study, 59.8% had one type of FGIDs, 39.2% had two types, and 1% had three types.
There was negative correlation between the prevalence of FGIDs and age, it is more among young age. There was higher prevalence of FIGDs among female gender, third order of birth and increase in family number. There was no significant difference between the prevalence of FIGDs and income.
There was positive correlation between FGIDs and impaired HRQOL.
