Abstract

This study was carried out on 100 one day broiler chicks for 6 weeks to study the effect of dietary supplementation of 0 (Gr 1), 0.5% (Gr 2), 1.0% (Gr 3) and 1.5% (Gr 4) of Withania somnifera root powder on growth performance, hematological parameters, some blood chemistry and immunity, as well as the antibacterial effect of Withania somnifera root powder absolute ethyl alcohol extract on E-coli O157 (In vitro). Our results revealed significant increase in the body weight and weight gain, and significant decrease in feed conversion ratio in (Gr 2) and (Gr 3). Hematological studies revealed significant increase in RBCs, packed cell volume and hemoglobin concentration in (Gr 2) and (Gr 3), and non-significant changes in MCV (fl), MCH (pg) and MCHC (%) in all groups treated by Withania somnifera root powder. Biochemical results revealed significant increase in total protein, globulins, Phosphorus and Calcium, and significant decrease in serum albumin, glucose and cholesterol. While ALT, AST, uric acid and creatinine showed non-significant changes in the groups that treated with Withania somnifera root powder 0.5 and 1%. Immunological investigation revealed significant increase in total leukocytic count, lymphocytes, globulins and interleukin-1, 6 and 12 in (Gr 2) and (Gr 3). The antibacterial effect of Withania somnifera root powder absolute ethyl alcohol extract on E-coli O157 (In vitro) revealed that the bacterial growth of E-coli O157 completely inhibited in Muller -Hinton plate at 150 mg/ml alcohol extract.
