Abstract

Cephalometric radiographs are routinely used as a basic diagnostic aid for orthodontic cases before treatment. Many authors developed different analyses to evaluate lateral cephalometric radiographs. Most of these
analyses were numerical ones that involve linear and angular measurements and comparing person’s findings with the normative values for the population. Nonnumerical analyses have been developed to avoid comparisons of patients with normative values and to individualize the diagnostic approach for each patient. The current study was conducted to appraise the applicability of the CentroGraphic analysis in the evaluation of the morphologic characteristics of Egyptian adults and to compare it with the conventional numerical cephalometric measurements. The study was carried out on a selected sample of 208 pretreatment lateral cephalometric radiographs of patients with different classes of malocclusion within the age range of 18-25 years.
Each lateral cephalometric radiograph was traced twice, one to be analyzed with the conventional cephalometric analysis and the other to be analyzed with the CentroGraphic analysis. Seventeen cephalometric linear and angular parameters were measured and interpreted in relation to the Egyptian norms. Their findings were compared to what was found with the CentroGraphic analysis. Both findings were tabulated and statistically analyzed using the Chi-square test. Cramer’s V was finally used as a post test to evaluate the association between both methods.
