Abstract

More than seventeen small-scale municipal wastewater treatment plants were evaluated in a eight governorates, named ( Kafr El-Sheikh, EL-Gharbia, El-Fayoum, EL-Sharqia, Monofyia, Damietta, Red Sea, Suez, El-Fayoum), lied in Egypt. Six plants are using chemical oxidation treatment technology, six plants are using oxidation ditch technology, and five plants are using extended aeration.
The performance aspects studied in this research were namely, BOD, COD and TSS removal efficiencies for the last mentioned technologies. These parameters have been assessed and compared to the results of recent literature publications and the Egyptian Standard Specifications.
5.2 Conclusions of the Present Work
Performance evaluation between eight WWTPs was introduced in this study and a great variability was noticed in the influent concentrations and in the removal efficiencies, considering all analyzed constituents and all treatment technologies
• The removal efficiencies of chemical compact WWTPs were the best one for the discharges below 500m3/d. the overall removal efficiencies of BOD; COD and TSSwere97.95%, 97.31% and98.4%, respectively. This technology is applied for the packaged plants.
• The chemical oxidation treatment applied in Red Sea governorate has proved a great performance for different contaminants. The average removal efficiency of BOD, COD and TSS was 97.17%; 96.6, and 97.49%, respectively. This technology gives an excellent efficiency for the discharges ranged from50 m3/d to 500m3/d
• The performance of oxidation ditch technology was very good. The average removal efficiencies were BOD. ; COD and TSS was 93.955% , 92.875%, and91.2% ,respectively. The discharges of this technology ranged from 1000m3/d to 6000m3/d.
• The performance of extended aeration technology was moderate and secured a BOD, COD and TSS was86.59%, 87.91%, and 87.402% for removal efficiency, respectively. This performance was lower than expected. We can conclude that the chemical oxidation has the high efficiency in BOD, COD and TSS than the oxidation ditches and the extended aeration.
• The cost of treatment per cubic of wastewater of chemical oxidation for compact unit with capacity (50-500) m3/d is less than the biological treatment for the same capacity with respect to equipment.
• The cost of treatment per cubic of wastewater of chemical oxidation for compact unit with capacity (50-500) m3/d is less than the biological treatment for the same capacity with respect to running.•In some cases it is better to use biological treatment and then chemical treatment to eliminate of non-biodegradable components.
