Abstract In Egypt, due to the limited fossil fuel energy resources and almost fully utilized hydro-energy and the increased demand for electricity for housing, development and investment projects, Egypt is in an urgent need to start its national project of implementing nuclear power plants. In addition, it is well known that during the coming few decades, Egypt will confront a fresh water scarcity problem and will need the construction of desalination plants. In this regard, nuclear power reactors will be an important source that insures providing electricity and/or heat for such desalination plants. Accordingly, the target of the current research program is to investigate the suitability of some concrete components for producing ”High performance heavy concrete” that could afford radiation shielding and high durability against the affection surrounding environment (e.g. heat, stresses, corrosive marine environment, etc.). The objective of this study is to benefit from some natural raw materials and industrial wastes and to study their use as innovative alternatives to some internationally accepted concrete components, and to evaluate their performance when used in the concrete of nuclear facilities (high performance heavy concrete), (HPC-M60). Keywords: Heavy High performance concrete, Heavy aggregates, Durability of concrete, Nuclear constructions, Gamma rays, Fast neutrons. |
