Abstract

The thesis aims to define the concept of racism, explain its reasons and kinds; it also tends to indicate its impact on all people in America whether whites or blacks through the works of the great poets: Paul Laurence Dunbar (1872-1906), Claude McKay (1889-1948), and Langston Hughes (1902-1967). Also, the thesis will express the motives, conditions, causes, and elements of every poet which motivated him to fight and overcome racism by introducing a critical analysis of the themes of every poem. In addition, the thesis will evaluate the success of every poet in conveying the messages of struggle, protest, and revolution to his people by presenting analytic comparison between them.
The thesis is divided into an Introduction, Three Chapters, and a Conclusion. Chapter I “Racial Discrimination,” will explain the definition of racial discrimination and its kinds according to this definition. The theme of racial discrimination will be followed by its kinds: race, color, and nationality. In addition, it will illustrate the meaning of racism and its types. Chapter one, illustrated every poet’s treatment of the racial discrimination theme and its kinds and how the treatment proves the thesis aim. Chapter two explained the South and its crimes as a theme, in contrast with the North and its hope also, the contradiction between the North and the South proves the subjectiveness of the thesis. Chapter three was devoted to the analytical and the critical comparison among the three poets. The different techniques among the three poets besides illustrating the theme and their techniques prove the thesis’ aim. They have a common theme but different aims. So, this thesis is considered the first thesis which discusses the common theme of the three poets critically and presents an analytical comparison among their techniques.
