Abstract

Background: Breast cancer (BC) is the most common type of cancer in women. A combination of genetic factors and individual lifestyle habits influences breast cancer risk and tumor behavior. Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4)plays important roles in regulating innate immunity and its activation may be an important event in tumor cell immune evasion. TLR4 gene polymorphisms have been shown to be associated with impaired immune responses and may affect the development of various cancers. High levels of tissue inhibitor of matrix metalloproteinase-1 (TIMP-1) have been implicated in progression of several human cancers, including breast cancer and is associated with poor outcome.
