Abstract

This research has addressed the ability to predict fire suppression by water mist using computer modeling with fire dynamic simulator (FDS).
5.2 FDS Modeling
A Fire Dynamic Simulator (FDS) program (PYROSIM) is used to simulate the fire & fire suppression by water mist in compartment at different geometrical and operating conditions as:
- Nozzles configuration in relation to the hanger height and distance from fire source.
- Water mist flow rate and mist droplet diameter.
- Heat release rate.
Basic output results are selected and drown for evaluation of the used fire suppression scenarios as: (temperature, contours, average temperature, fine extinguishment time & oxygen and steam contours).
The output results of the simulated FDS model are verified by comparison with results of an experimental research (Liu Yinshui Model) on water mist fire suppression performance in an enclosed space & NFPA 750 experiments.
5.3 Conclusions
After running the computer simulations for different sizes of droplet water mist, different nozzle flow rate, different heat release & different nozzles configuration at different heights of hanger, the following conclusions are estimated:
 The time of firefighting is reduced with decreasing the droplet size of water mist (up to 50 μm).
 The fire suppression time decreases as a result of increasing water mist flow rate injection.
 Detecting suitable configurations for nozzles leads to reduce the time of fire extinguishing.
5.4 Future Work
 Studying the fire characteristics in a hanger with open windows
