Abstract

Diabetes represents an emerging global epidemic and one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality. (219) Although many serious complications, such as kidney failure or blindness, can affect individuals with diabetes, it is the complications of foot that take the greatest toll. (3) Currently it can be estimated that millions of people are or will be affected by diabetic foot. (219) It has been said that “every 30 seconds a limb is lost as a consequence of diabetes.(7) Up to 66% of the persons admitted to the hospital with a diabetic foot infection have osteomyelitis.(220) Its presence increases morbidity, risk of amputation and mortality. (11),(12) charcot neuro-osteoarthropathy is another devastating complication of diabetic peripheral neuropathy which can be another important cause of amputation. The 5-year mortality rate after an amputation is more than 45 percent.(219) However that , it has been estimated that up to 85 percent of amputations occurring per year are preventable through early detection of risky patient and early intervention in a skilled multidisciplinary foot care team. In spite differentiation between CN and OM is often obvious, but it still difficult in many cases that may be need further investigations such MRI and Labeled Leucocyte Scan. Accuracy of MRI in diagnosing charcot arthropathy versus charcot arthropathy with osteomyelitis both in open or intact skin is extremely challenging. (32).
