Abstract

The current thesis comprised seven chapters: The first chapter contains an introduction includes types of brain tumors, techniques of diagnosis, theory and the mechanism of the magnetic resonance and the infrared spectroscopy and a literature survey on the application of brain tumors. The second chapter includes the aim of the work which was evaluation of Infra-Red Spectroscopy as a probe of Pediatric Brain Tumors compared with Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy. The third chapter contains the instruments used in the study and the practical procedures of the magnetic resonance and infrared spectroscopy in details. The fourth chapter covers a comprehensive overview of the results as follow: The demographic data of the participants, types of the studied tumors with degree of malignancy such as Medulloblastoma, Astrocytoma grade I, Astrocytoma grade II, Glioblstoma-multiforme GBM grade IV, Ependymoma grade II, Ependymoma grade III, PNET, ATRT, Hemangioblastoma, Meningioma, Neurocytoma, its locations, the MRS findings, the FTIR findings. The results revealed increase in proteins (including amide I, II and III) to be an indicator of brain pathology and was observed in different types of tumors as
Medulloblastoma, Ependymoma, Astrocytoma and PNET, while the lipid structures decreased in the all tumors. These significant differences between normal and different types of brain tumors were observed in the FTIR spectra. Also the results of MRS revealed an elevated cho. Peaks and reduced NAA and Cr peaks in all tumor types. The Fifth chapter embraces the discussion of the results and the agreement
and disagreement with the other published manuscripts .Also, this part refers to some important points which must be studied carefully The Sixth chapter contains the final conclusions from the current study. Where, the FTIR technique has the potential to identify the pediatric tumor tissue in a quick manner. It worth to mention that, the current study is the first our experience in this field and is considered one of the first manuscripts used FTIR in pediatric brain tumors (to our knowledge) paving the route to use this technique as an intra-operative tool and aiding in the decision to continue resection or retain tissue during surgery . The Seventh chapter includes a list of references and books used in this study.
