Abstract Antimicrobial agents are essentially important in reducing the global burden of infectious diseases. However, as resistant pathogens develop and spread, the effectiveness of the antibiotics is diminished. This type of bacterial resistance to the antimicrobial agents poses a very serious threat to public health, and for all kinds of antibiotics, including the major last-resort drugs. Therefore, alternative antimicrobial strategies are urgently needed, and thus this situation has led to a re-evaluation of the therapeutic use of ancient remedies, such as plants and plant-base products, including honey. The aim of the present study was to determine in vitro antibacterial (bactericidal and bacteriostatic) effect of honey against organisms isolated from different community and hospital- acquired skin infections and compare the antibacterial potency of five different types of honey that are commercially used. This work was carried out in the Microbiology and Immunology Department, Faculty of Medicine, Tanta University in the period from May 2016 to July 2017. This study comprised 50 patients admitted during the period of research to surgical intensive care, burn and surgical units in Tanta University Hospitals and patients coming to outpatient clinic of Surgery Department. The subjects were classified into 2 groups.group 1: patients with hospital -acquired(HA)infection. group 2: patients with community -acquired(CA)infection. |
