Abstract

The modern goals of breast cancer treatment have gone beyond cure, to include maximizing aesthetic outcome and quality of life. Majority of breast cancer treatments adversely affect breast aesthetic appearance and cause morbidity due to deformity, hence some have required contralateral breast symmetrization procedures to meet patient satisfaction, improve aesthetic appearance and achieve symmetry. The procedures used for contralateral symmetrization vary depending on the volume and ptosis of the contralateral breast, as well as the procedure carried out on ipsilateral diseased side.
This study aimed at evaluation of types of contralateral symmetrization procedures, complications & its management, patient satisfaction & aesthetic outcomes, and early detection of contralateral occult lesions.
The study had been conducted on 30 female breast cancer patients, admitted either to Alexandria University Main Hospital, or to Oncology Center- Mansoura University (OCMU), in the period between May 2010 to December 2016, follow up had ranged from 17 months to 79 months, the mean follows up period was 42.6 ± 19.6 months.
The data was retrieved from patient’s medical records entailed: complete history taking and clinical examination, breast U/S & mammogram, biopsies & hormonal receptors, metastatic workup, routine laboratory investigations , surgical procedures tailored at management of tumor, details of contralateral symmetrization procedure, complication, results of assessed suspicious contralateral glandular tissues, postoperative oncological follow up, as well as Subjective evaluation of patient aesthetic satisfaction, relief of macromastia symptoms & improvement in body image of women with pendulous breasts, and objective evaluation of aesthetic outcome and symmetry by doctors, The evaluation was performed by simple score and the mean was recorded using a grading system. A score of 5 to 1 (5 = excellent; 4 = good; 3 = fair; 2 = poor; 1 = bad) was given after evaluation.
