Abstract

Nursing performance appraisal is among the most critical human resource functions that bring global success for one organization. It is a powerful tool to calibrate, refine and reward the performance of the nurses. It helps to analyze their achievements and evaluate their contribution towards the achievements of the organizational goals. Nurses’ perception regarding to the performance appraisal is a significant component in nurses’ acceptance and satisfaction of performance appraisal. A good perception will create a positive working environment in the organization, while a negative perception will affect the organization performance. The present study aimed to assess nursing staff perception and suggestion on current nurses’ performance appraisal instrument. The present study was conducted in El-Menshawy General Hospital, affiliated to Ministry of Health. The study subject included (200) nurses with three years’ work experience or more and from different nursing levels. Data was collected through one structured modified tool, this was included: nursing staff perception and suggestion on current nurses’ performance appraisal instrument questionnaire. It was included three parts. First part included characteristics of nursing staff. Second part included data about nursing staff perception on current nurses’ performance appraisal instrument. It included three subscales: The rating techniques, rating accuracy and training. Third part included data about nursing staff perception on suggested dimensions for future nurses’ performance appraisal instrument. It was included eighteen subscales: attendance and punctuality, work habits, staff relations, oral communication, productivity results, supervision/leadership, quality standards, problem solving, writing/drawing, record keeping, work planning, financial planning, material planning, coordination, directing others, know-how, effort/persistence, and innovation. The responses of nursing staff perception and suggestion on current nurses’ performance appraisal instrument were measured on five-point Likert-Scale ranging from (1-5), with 1= absolutely disagree, 2= disagree, 3=a neutral, 4= agree, and 5= absolutely agree. Pilot study was carried out on 10% of nursing staff. Questionnaire was submitted to five experts for testing its content and face validity and internal consistency reliability.
