Abstract Urban promenades play an important role in a city’s life. They are platforms to create social relations, as well as to promote civil life for community. This type of places are formed by people’s relationship with physical environment. The design aspects of landscape elements are shaped and influenced, by five main interactive qualities; improve opportunities for interaction quality (passive, active engagement and design in versatility), attractiveness, comfort, safety and security, and sense of belonging. Thus, users’ interaction experience can be weakened if these qualities are threatened, as a result of inaccurate design or/ and lack maintenance and local control. The design aspects and interactive qualities are the grounds of this study. The way design aspects are manipulated and organized improve urban promenade interactive qualities and shape users’ experience, so design aspects of landscaping elements have gradually become more vital. The Pharos promenade is one of major attraction and recreational centre. It is located at the waterfront situated on the Mediterranean coast of Egypt, which is a historical part of Alexandria. It is considered one of the main social areas, affords users’ need for interaction and social experience. However, interactive qualities of urban promenades in Alexandria have become under the threat of losing its social role. This is why it is important to provide a methodology that highlight the design aspects of landscape elements, in order to achieve and enhance those qualities. By analysing, the case of Pharos promenade in Alexandria, Egypt and how design aspects promote or weaken interactive qualities. The thesis concludes with recommendations on how to pinpoint the most efficient qualities that encourage people to interact and engage. It also highlights the most threatening factors that weakens these qualities. |
