Abstract The present study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of an enrichment program based on citizenship concepts in developing oral communication and citizenship skills of the EFL students studying at the preparatory stage. Thirty eight first-year students at the preparatory stage (Saad Elsherbini Preparatory School, Menyat El Nasr Directorate) were the subjects in the present study. They studied the enrichment program in the second term of the school year 2016 – 2017. Five instruments were constructed: first, a checklist to identify the most important oral communication skills appropriate for the preparatory stage. Second, a pre-post listening and speaking test and a rubric to score participants’ speaking skills during the pre-post test. Third, a checklist to identify the most important citizenship skills appropriate for the preparatory stage. Fourth, a pre-post citizenship skills test. The test focused on the language skills related to citizenship skills under consideration. Fifth, a checklist to identify the most important citizenship concepts which the enrichment program was based on suitable and appropriate for the preparatory students. A teacher’s guide and pupils’ sheet were designed to be based on (CLT) approach. Four hypotheses were verified by the researcher to test their validity. Results showed that using an enrichment program based on citizenship concepts was effective in developing the oral communication and citizenship skills for the first year preparatory school students. |
