Abstract

Background: breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in Egypt, constituting 29% of National Cancer Institute cases in Cairo, Egypt. The biological role of human mammaglobin (hMAM) that is considered as a promising marker for breast cancer. Few and controversial data are available about the diagnostic value of mammaglobin (A) immunohistochemistry in the detection of lymph node metastasis,
Aim of the Work
The present work aim to investigate the expression of mammaglobin(A) in primary breast cancer and lymph nodes and determine its correlation with conventional prognostic parameters such as (Age, Grade, Stage, Lymph nodes status, Hormonal status).
Subjects and Methods
Immunohistochemical stain for Mammaglobin (A) in fifty (50) cases of primary breast carcinoma, obtained from Medical Research Institute, Department of Pathology.
Results
According to mammaglobin staining of breast cancer tissues revealed 16 (32%) cases were showing weak mammaglobin staining, 18 (36 %) cases were of moderate staining of total cases and 16 (32 %) cases were of strong staining.
Mammoglobin staining of Lymph nodes of breast cancer revealed 13 (26%) cases were of negative mammaglobin staining, 37 (74%) cases were positive, and of 18 cases H&E negative LN, (5) cases become positive on mammaglobin staining
Conclusion
Mammaglobin is specific tumor marker for breast tissues,and over expression in breast cancer tissues is associated with a better prognosis. human MAG does carry the potential of being a molecule of diagnostic and prognostic significance. Furthermore, it appears to have an additional potential usefulness as a screening tool for breast cancer. More studies will have to be analyzed to explain the differences of results found by some groups.
