Abstract

Background: Immediate breast reconstruction has psychological benefit to the patient by decreasing any feelings of physical mutilation and diminished femininity, less total operating time and less expensive. For the surgeon, it facilitates the reconstruction and improves aesthetic results.
Objective: This result was conducted to do short term evaluation for breast reconstruction in breast cancer patients.
Patients and Methods: Our study was conducted on 40 patients diagnosed with breast cancer who underwent mastectomy followed by immediate breast reconstruction with latissimus dorsi myocutaneous flap.
Results: The available data found that immediate breast reconstruction is oncologically safe and did not negatively affect the recurrence rate nor did it interfere with the detection and treatment of the recurrences when an accurate surgical dissection is performed. Hence, the use of immediate breast reconstruction is considered the preferred approach in almost all cases in which breast reconstruction is planned. LD flap reconstruction proved to be the most effective and efficient method of reconstruction. The LD flap gave very good esthetic result and symmetry in our patients in spite of the large skin pockets. With the least operative time.
Conclusion: It was found that the use of LD flap is reliable and versatile method of breast reconstruction. It gives adequate tissues that obviates the use of prosthesis, and gives excellent satisfactory aesthetic results, with good matching and better quality of life.
