Abstract Rabbit pasteurellosis is a typical bacterial illness caused by Pasteurella multocida and has been recorded as a serious and highly contagious disease of rabbits. Antibiotic treatment of pasteurellosis becomes ineffective due to development of antibiotic resistance. Vaccination is the best effective method for control of rabbit pasteurellosis. The use of attenuated vaccine is not safe enough, while the use of killed vaccine is safe but has the disadvantage of short term protection. Propolis flavonoids were represented that it considered as adjuvant, had immune enhancement, for instance, enhancing the differentiation in T, B lymphocyte cell and expanding neutralizing antibody titers. The present work was performed on propolis and formalized killed Pasteurella multocida vaccine to evaluate the efficacy of propolis as natural immune-stimulant agent alone and after combination with formalized killed Pasteurella multocida vaccine against experimental challenge of rabbits with Pasteurella multocida strain. In addition, studying the effect of formalized killed Pasteurella multocida vaccine injection, either single or double doses, against experimental challenge of rabbits with Pasteurella multocida strain. This study was carried out on sixty rabbits (1.5 kg average body weight and 6–8 weeks old) which were divided into 6 groups (1-6). Each group contained 10 rabbits. Gp.(1) was kept as a negative control for the gps. (2-6). Gp.(2) was kept as a positive control for the gps. (3-6) and was injected S/C with broth culture of virulent Pasteurella multocida strain (0.2 ml/ kg B.W.). Gp.(3) was injected S/C with a single dose of propolis (50 mg /kg B.W.). Gp.(4) was vaccinated with Pasteurella multocida vaccine only (a single S/C dose of 1 ml/kg B.W.). Gp.(5) was vaccinated with Pasteurella multocida vaccine only (S/C dose of 1 ml/kg B.W. followed by similar booster dose after 21 days). Gp.(6) was injected S/C with the vaccine (a single S/C dose of 1 ml/kg B.W.) mixed with propolis (50 mg /kg B.W.) as an adjuvant. |
