Abstract

Meningitis is a life-threatening inflammatory disease of the meninges. If not treated, septic meningitis can lead to brain swelling, permanent disability, coma, and even death.
To reduce the morbidity and mortality related to septic meningitis, it is important to differentiate septic meningitis from aseptic meningitis during the acute phase of the disease.
The present study was done to investigate the value of the serum PCT in the diagnosis of meningitis and its role in differentiating septic from aseptic meningitis as well as its prognosis.
To achieve this goal, we conducted this study on a total number of 63 subjects aged (from birth - 60years old), admitted to Shebin El-Kom Fever Hospital and Menoufia University Hospital during the period from December 2016 to November 2017. The studied populations were subdivided into three groups:
• group (1): Including 25 patients with septic meningitis
• group (2): Including 20 patients with aseptic meningitis
• group (3): Including 18 age and sex matched subjects
 All patients and control groups were subjected to the following:-
History, clinical examination and laboratory investigations including
• CSF studies: cytological (leukocyte count with differential), chemical (glucose and protein concentrations) and bacteriological (microscopy and culture).
