Abstract

In medical images such as computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), a lot of image information is created. Such images need a huge storage disk space and large bandwidth to be transmitted over the network. So, efficient storage and transmission techniques are urgent to reduce the required storage capacity and transmission bandwidth.
In this thesis, three effective and low complexity transmission techniques of medical images are presented. First, a hybrid lossless image compression technique based on the discrete wavelet transform (DWT) is introduced. Second, the enhanced hybrid lossless image compression technique is introduced by adding an arithmetic coding stage. A comparison between them is performed in terms of bit per pixel and compression ratio. The third technique is proposed for efficient transmission of medical images which can be expressed as (ETOMI).
