Abstract

Early detection of diabetic nephropathy in children with type 1 Diabetes Mellitus used to be with microalbuminuria which is not very sensitive and specific marker, so Renal Resistive Index (RRI) represented by renal duplex US can help in early detection of diabetic nephropathy.
Objective: Appraise the value of Renal Doppler Indices in early detection of Diabetic Nephropathy in Children with Type-1 Diabetes Mellitus
Patients and Methods: cross sectional study of 30 cases recruited over one year , all patients were subjected to Renal Doppler indices (RRI) done done by US machine( Toshiba Xario) after exclusion of any structural or functional renal changes, Urinary Albumin Excretion(UAE) with 24-h urine collection for microalbumiuria with a level from 30-300mg/d considered microlabuminuria and HbA1C for evaluation of glycemic control.
Results: A statistically significant correlation was observed between microalbumiuria in one hand and renal duplex indices represented by RRI in other hand with a statistically significant correlation between HbA1C and RRI.
Conclusion: RRI presented by renal duplex US is a safe , low cost , applicable and well established technique in early detection of diabetic nephropathy in children with type 1 DM.
