Abstract Diabetic peripheral neuropathy is the most common chronic complications of diabetes mellitus, the most common type of peripheral neuropathy, and the most serious type because of its debilitating effect that develop in up to 30-50% of patients with diabetes.Vitamin B12 deficiency is a potential comorbidity that is often overlooked, despite the fact many diabetic patients are at risk for this specific disorders. For example, many diabetic patients are treated with metformin, a medicatin that lower serum vitamin B12 level but fortunately it will take between 2-10 years for B12 deficiency to develop even when a diet is completely lacking in the vitamin.This study was carried out to measure blood level of vitamin B12 in diabetic patients.Our study included 170 participants divided in 4 groups: group A: included included 30 healthy volunteers, group B included 40 diabetic patients without peripheral neuropathy, group C included 50 patients with painless diabetic neuropathy, and group Dincluded 50 patients with painful diabetic neuropathy.Results showed that: blood level of vitamin b12 was higher in the control group than the diabetic group, and higher in diabetic group without neuropathy than diabetic groups with neuropathy, also vitamin B12 was higher in non metformin group than metformin group. |
