Abstract This study examines the effect of follower’s characteristics-namely; Follower’s Power Profile (FPP), Follower’s Motives, and Follower’s Emotional Intelligence (FEI) - on the amount of Social Influence (SI) exerted over the leader. It also tests the moderating effect of Follower’s Immediacy on these relationships. To test these hypotheses, questionnaires were administered to 103 senior nurses and their corresponding 309 subordinates, working in nine hospitals, in Alexandria, Egypt. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) was used to test the hypotheses. The analysis indicated a significant positive effect of FPP on SI. It also showed that Follower’s Immediacy significantly moderated the effect of FPP, Follower’s Power and Achievement Motives, and FEI- on SI. Yet, it showed a negative effect for Follower’s Achievement motive and FEI- on SI in the presence of Follower’s Immediacy as a moderator. An interpretation of this controversial result is provided in the light of the cultural context of this study. The value of this research stems from being follower-centric. Although there are well-established findings regarding the leader’s influence on followers, there are conflicting results regarding the reversed effect. This study aims at contributing to closing this gap by examining the follower’s characteristics that are expected to affect the follower’s influence. |
