Abstract

This study is a randomized, single-blinded, prospective, right-left comparative clinical trial. It was carried out on 30 patients of both genders who were diagnosed as vitiligo and attended to Dermatology clinic in Suez Canal University Hospital. The main objective was to compare the combination therapy of PRP and NB-UVB in treatment of vitiligo with NB-UVB alone in the same patient.
All patients received phototherapy sessions NB- UVB (311-313nm) 3 times every week for 3 months, where bilaterally symmetrical lesions (one on each side) were selected in each patient. One side was chosen randomly using random number set for PRP intradermal injection.
Intradermal injection of PRP was once per week for 10 weeks in one side of the bilaterally symmetrical lesions (one on each side), and then the combined therapy was compared with the other side (NB-UVB alone).Patients were followed up every week for 3 months with photos captured for the lesions and by measuring the areas and progression of the pigmentations.
We found that there was no statistically significant difference between both groups regarding response to treatment where P value >0.05 and there was no significant improvement in pigmentations in the lesions on the combined therapy compared to the other group on NB-UVB alone.
Our study revealed that the response of treatment in the combination therapy (PRP plus NB-UVB) group was marked response in (3.3%), moderate in (13.3%), mild in (23.3%), (60 %) of patients had no response to the treatment and no patient showed complete response, while in the (NB-UVB) alone group; the response of treatment was marked response in (3.3%), moderate in (6.7%), mild in (23.3%), (66.7 %) of patients had no response to the treatment and no patient showed complete response, after 10 sessions of PRP intradermal injections once per week for 10 weeks duration.
