المستخلص

The individual goes through successive stages of growth, aiming at progressing through them till the moment of perfection. That process of growth may sometimes hindered by an obstacle. That obstacle may be physical or mental or emotional or even social. When that obstacle is found, the individual finds himself different from those around him, followed by helplessness feeling and deprivation. He desperately need an urgent help from others and their compassion. He may also have a feel rejection. At that moment, he and the like are called ”people with special needs.” The mental disability category is one of the special needs groups. It refers to general mental performance less than the average and is accompanied by a lack of adaptive behavior. The effects are evident in the low cognitive skills (language, literacy, etc.), and low social skills (personal skills, self-esteem, solving social problems, etc.), and practical skills such as: (daily life activities, personal care skills, etc.) (Laura & Sardinia-prager, 2015: 9). There is no doubt that all these affects negatively on the psychological compatibility of the mentally handicapped, and his social relations and environmental activities, which prevents an active participation in society equal to the participation of others, since it is not limited to the existence of mental disability, but also its consequences. The most serious consequences of mental disability is the individual`s attitude that become a tool in the hands of others who reject him once, and pity him at other times, he only can obey their orders, and renders himself to them, which is called suggestibility. Suggestibility refers to a person’s acceptance an idea, without sufficient reasons to accept it (Abdel Aziz al-Koussi, 1993: 175-176). Some studies, including: (Sondenaa, et al.,2010); and (London, et al.,2013)indicate that mentally disabled people are more suggestibility than ordinary peers. Their suggestibility varies according to their intelligence, chronological and mental age, ability to communicate, the strength of memory, personal characteristics, and their physical and psychological condition. The risk of Suggestibility can be seen through its negative psychological and social effects on the individual and the society. These may be behavioral and social problems that result from Suggestibility. These include: the problem of aggressive behavior. When an individual is quick to be seduced and is easy to get influenced, he is more likely to beat or insult the others; because he carries out all that is said to him, even if it is wrong(Muhammad Abu Rayah, 2006) (Najih al-Maamouri, Ali al-Maamouri, 2011). As indicated by other studies, including:(Crocker,et al.,2014), and (Savage,2015) that the aggressive behavior is one of the most common forms of behavior among the mentally disabled, namely: any behavior they issue, whether verbal or physical, direct or indirect, that may cause harm to themselves or the others. It varies depending on the degree and severity of mental disability, age, methods of treatment, their health and psychological problems, and their personal characteristics. Therefore, the existence of suggestibility in the mentally disabled may be behaviorally translated into following the others in all their words and actions, and obey them blindly, and the implementation of everything that is said to them or ordered to them even if it came to attacking the others in any form of aggressive behavior.
